CRE is the formal, intentional catechetical component of the Youth Ministry
program. CRE meets on Monday evenings during the school year for grades
seven through high school sophomores. The class sizes are small to
facilitate more group discussion on faith related topics that are important
to young people today. Catechists also use a variety of activities and media
to help connect our faith to the everyday lives of our youth and families.
The curriculum we currently follow is theme based. Seventh graders learn
about Scripture through the Discovering series’ “Exploring the Bible” and
the use of the Catholic Youth Bible, both from St. Mary’s Press. During
the second half of the year the focus for seventh grade turns to the life
and ministry of Jesus using “Meeting Jesus”, also part of the Discovering
series. Eighth grade will be using the Catholic Connections Handbook, also
from St. Mary’s Press. Within that book, they will be studying the units
on “God, Revelation and Faith” as well as “The Holy Spirit and the Church”.
Freshman and sophomores will be using the Catholic Faith Handbook from
St. Mary’s Press as the basis for their catechesis. Freshmen will
concentrate on Christian Morality and sophomores on Liturgy and
Sacraments and Church History,
Prayer is a very important component of CRE. Each class devotes a portion
of their time learning about and using different prayer styles. A retreat
for high school students is available to reflect more deeply on our prayer
lives as Catholic Christians. We also participate as a group in prayer
services and Liturgy during CRE.
